FIND A MENTOR.
It's simple, common sense that if someone
wanted to be a journeyman plumber, he or she would be wise to find someone who
either has retired or is about to retire from plumbing field to act as a source
of guidance, advice, and inspiration. It's helpful to have someone you can
share an occasional cup of tea, kick around ideas - someone you can turn to,
ask questions of, seek guidance from and philosophize.
I've never seen or even heard of someone
moving backward as a result of finding a mentor. Yet when I ask around, very
few people, as an overall percentage, admit to having one.
For the mentor and mentee there is often a
win-win relationship as the mentee benefit from enormous experience they would
have needed almost a lifetime to gain and for the mentor an opportunity to pass
on insights gained throughout their vast experience.
It's
important to network, it's more important to find an excellent, caring mentor
who is genuinely interested in sharing wisdom and providing guidance and
positive critique that will help avoid many unnecessary mistakes. It's equally
important to also ensure that as your gain in experience and learn from mentors
we also prepare to mentor those behind us and equally pass the wisdom to them
